The company was acquired by Apple a few years ago. During enrollment, the fingerprint sensor captures the ridges and valleys of the fingerprint image before discarding the actual image. The minutiae, or distinctive features, of the fingerprint get stored on the device instead.When a user tries to access the device again, a matching algorithm performs the magic by matching the stored fingerprint minutiae against the new minutiae. Different companies have used different techniques to assess whether the finger is live versus fake, such as sensing the live pours on the finger. While the technology is robust, corner cases can still lead to unauthorized access, often due to weaknesses in the matching algorithm.
