My son gave me an Acer 5742 that is newer and with more RAM. He tried to upgrade it from Windows 7 to 10. I say tried because it barely runs and caches everything. I put Kubuntu Linux on it, and it runs great. We used it for teaching online. So you can try Windows 10 but I predict you will be disappointed at best but probably unsuccessful. Better to use a medium or lightweight Linux distribution like MX or Puppy. Actually, I have an HP laptop of that vintage, and it runs Linux Mint well but that's the heaviest of the Linux distros. Still, better than Windows.
