Do You Really Enjoy Google Chrome's Dark Mode Theme?

In recent years, dark mode has surged in popularity, and there's a strong fascination surrounding it. According to various surveys, around 90% of users find it appealing. Personally, I find it particularly beneficial when working at night, as it reduces the strain on my eyes and minimizes exposure to blue spectrum light.

Google's Efforts in Dark Mode Implementation

Google is actively working on integrating dark mode into its Chrome browser and ChromeOS. For a few months, users have been able to activate dark mode on Chrome for Android, which changes the color of webpages. According to 9to5Google, this feature will soon be available cross-platform. While the dark mode is still under development, it currently has more pros than cons.

Pros of Google Chrome's Dark Mode

Battery Saving: Chrome offers two dark modes. The first one makes the Chrome UI black while keeping webpages white, which is not particularly useful. The second mode, which you can enable via flags, makes the whole webpage black. This significantly reduces battery usage.

Better for Surfing at Night: Dark mode is especially beneficial when browsing at night, as it is less irritating to the eyes and reduces visual strain.

Cons of Google Chrome's Dark Mode

Visual Distortions: When you enable dark mode through flags, some images on webpages are displayed as photo negatives, which requires you to disable this feature to see them properly.

Loss of Background Test: The fluid background, which is one of the eye-candies, is lost when dark mode is enabled. However, the overall dark theme enhances the browsing experience, especially as you navigate through tabs.

A Personal Perspective

I had to go through a considerable amount of effort to set up the fluid background, which was a highlight for me. However, when I turned on dark mode, the background vanished. Although the dark mode still looks impressive, I miss the colorful and dynamic fluid background. Over time, the dark mode's subtle contrast and perfect theme have gradually won me over.

Ultimately, whether one enjoys dark mode or not is highly subjective. It depends on personal preferences and the usability it provides. There is no definitive answer, as both sides have valid points.
