Exploring Custom ROMs: A Journey Through Personal Experimentation and Phone Modding
Custom ROMs have always fascinated me. They offer a unique way to personalize and optimize your smartphone, turning it into a vehicle for creativity and experimentation. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of trying out a plethora of custom ROMs on my various devices, each offering its own unique features and experiences.
My Current Experience
Currently, I'm running a Samsung Xperia Z5 with the Existenz ROM, which is an open-source custom ROM based on the Sony Xperia Z2, but with the bloatware stripped away. This ROM provides a streamlined and efficient user experience, as the default Sony firmware often includes unnecessary and intrusive applications. While I still have a folder full of custom ROMs on my SD card, the Xperia Z5 primarily running Existenz is my primary and fully functional device. The reason behind not switching around quite as much as I used to is due to the carrier locking the bootloader which requires the SIM card slot to be unlocked. Since I’m still paying off my phone, this additional requirement is a bit of a hurdle for me.
Initial Developer’s Phone: Moto E 2nd Gen LTE
One of my most significant experiences with custom ROMs came from my first developer's phone, the Moto E 2nd Gen LTE, which launched in early 2015 running Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. This device has remained an esteemed piece in my collection, not just for its nostalgic value, but also for the rich pool of custom ROMs available for it. Over the past five years, more than 200 custom ROMs have been developed on this device, ranging from Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to the current build of Android 10.
