Exploring Ringtone Preferences: A Deep Dive

Do you often change your phone ringtone, or do you prefer to keep it the same for years? Many people hold onto their favorite ringtones with fondness, while others frequently update their selections. In this article, we explore the habits and preferences of individuals when it comes to choosing and changing phone ringtone.

Changing Ringtone: A Personalized Journey

One user, who has over 450 custom text tones, shares their experience with maintaining a consistent ringtone. While their default ringtone is a personal voice sample from a radio promo, they frequently add new songs and remove old ones as they meet new people. For example, when casual friends get married, their ringtones are often removed, while close friends' tones remain unchanged.

Another individual chooses their ringtone based on their mood, with specific ringtones lasting for a week, a fortnight, or even months. Some of the ringtones consist of seldom-heard songs, particularly from the 80s rock era and instrumental theme tracks from current and past movies and TV series. Their current ringtone is a catchy tune: “Staying Alive” by The Bee Gees.

Permanent Ringtone: A Symbol of Sentiment

The most striking example of a long-lasting ringtone is a user who has been using the same ringtone since 2007. This ringtone is a powerful and emotional symbol of their love and respect for their mother, whom they lost at a young age due to cancer. On the patriotic note, the ringtone is none other than the national anthem of India, Vande Mataram, rendered in the voice of the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

According to the user, Vande Mataram means ‘Mother, I Salute You,’ and it has remained the same since 2007 due to its powerful meaning. The user explains, 'I lost my father when I was 7 years old. He suffered from larynx cancer and my mother took him to Nanavati hospital Mumbai, and got him the best treatment possible at that time. After him, she ensured the best of everything for me as well as my siblings and I have seen all those struggling days. I remember one day she was not well and even then, she worked for too long and then the needle of the sewing machine pierced her finger. With the grace of God, everything is fine now. So with every breath, I want to say - mumma I love you, and I salute you. But I can’t say this to her directly, may be just because I never said it earlier. But my ringtone will always remain the same.'

Choosing Ringtone Based on Mood

Some individuals insist on choosing their ringtones based on their current mood, hence the duration of each ringtone varies significantly. They prefer to have a distinctive ringtone that no one else has, ensuring they are the first to identify their phone ringing in a crowded space.

On the other hand, they have personalized ringtones for people who call them often, as well as for those whose calls they want to ignore. Generally, they do not change these ringtones unless they have to factory restore their phone, which has only happened twice in 10 years of owning an iPhone.

Choosing and changing phone ringtone is not just about personal preference but also about emotional connections and memories. Whether it is a rare song, a personal voice sample, or a symbolic anthem, a phone ringtone can evoke a web of emotions and stories.
