How to Remove Mechanical Keyboard Caps without Tools

How to Remove Mechanical Keyboard Caps without Tools

Removing keycaps from a mechanical keyboard can be a tricky task, especially without the right tools. Whether you've misplaced your headset or just want to clean your keyboard, it's important to know the correct methods to avoid damaging your investment. There are two primary ways to remove keycaps:

Method 1: Using a Matching Key

The most effective method is to find a key that fits your keycap and push it between the keycap and the keyboard. Then, you can gently push down on the top of the stuck key while pulling up on the keycap to separate them. This technique works well because the edges of the found key naturally wedge under both the keycap and the keyboard, creating a reliable leverage point.

Method 2: Using a Blunt Object

Another option is to use a blunt object, such as an eraser or the lid of a pen. The blunt object can be placed between the keys, but this method may not be as effective as a matching key due to the lack of precise alignment. The blunt edge of the object may not create enough leverage to easily remove the keycap. However, it can still be used in a pinch if no matching key is available.

Challenges and Factory Insights

When it comes to removing keycaps, opinions vary widely. Some experts argue that it can be done without tools, while others say it's nearly impossible, especially with high-quality keyboards. From my experience working in a factory that produced MIL spec keyboards, I can confidently say that it depends on the hardware and design.

For example, solid-molded plastic keytops can be particularly stubborn. In one incident, I dropped a keyboard on the floor, and all the keycaps flew off during a demonstration for the press and company CEO. Despite the challenge of putting the keycaps back, I eventually managed to do so by using a neighbor's keyboard, a small brush, and some patient crawling around the floor.

Removing Keycaps on Laptops vs. Desktops

Laptops and desktop keyboards present different challenges when it comes to removing keycaps:

Laptops

Since laptop keyboards are typically lower and flatter, you can often use a fingernail to slide under the keycap. Be cautious of the sawhorse supports and the springs, especially under the wide keys. Putting the keycap back on can be tricky as well, but using a fingernail to hook the front of the keycap under the support and then snapping the key down can help.

Desktops

Desktop keyboards are usually more difficult to remove keycaps from because they are taller and narrower, making it harder to get a fingernail under them. In such cases, a small screwdriver can be used, along with a neighboring key as a fulcrum to pry the keycap up. However, beware of the long springs under the wide keys, which can make the process more challenging.

Here are some tips to keep in mind when removing keycaps:

Do not force the keycap off if it doesn't want to come off easily. This can cause damage to the keyboard. Use a thin brush to clean the inside of the keyboard instead of forcing the keycaps off. This can help prevent gunk and debris from building up under the keycaps. Avoid removing keycaps if possible. Regularly cleaning the outside of the keyboard and using a thin brush to remove gunk can be a less invasive option.

While it's possible to remove keycaps without tools, it's generally a less effective and more risky method. Therefore, it's often best to exercise caution and be gentle to avoid damaging your keyboard.
