Is a Smart TV Required for Jio GigaFiber Service?
No, a smart TV is not a necessity for Jio GigaFiber customers. Jio GigaFiber is a high-speed broadband internet service that provides fast internet connectivity. With this service, you can easily connect your regular TV to the internet using streaming devices like Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire Stick, or Roku, or even a set-top box that supports internet connectivity.
No Compulsion of a Smart TV
Jio GigaFiber connects to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which offers several advantages:
High-Speed Internet
The ONT allows you to enjoy high-speed internet up to 100 Mbps, subject to your subscribed plan.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
You can set SSIDs in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for flexible internet access. The ONT also supports a range of hidden features, such as using a traditional telephone (POTS) with an RJ11 port or access to voice and video call services via the JioCall app on your smartphone.
Use of Set-Top Box (STB)
To stream content on a TV, you can connect a set-top box (STB) through the ONT via a LAN cable or Wi-Fi. It is preferable to use a LAN connection for better performance. The TV used should support HDMI for displaying content from the STB.
Why Use a Set-Top Box (STB)?
While a smart TV can be an expensive option, typically costing 10-15 thousand more than a regular LED TV, an STB provides similar benefits at a much lower cost, around 2-3 thousand. STBs come with a variety of on-demand and streaming applications such as JIO TV Plus, and offer features like video conferencing with JioConference. Additionally, the user experience with an STB is often superior to that of a smart TV.
Usage on Old TVs
Jio GigaFiber is not limited to modern or smart TVs. An ONT can run on even an old CRT television. For example, my uncle uses one on a traditional CRT TV. Services like Hotstar, SonyLIV, Voot, Zee5, Disney Hotstar, and Amazon Prime can be accessed on a regular TV with an STB. Therefore, you do not need a smart TV to enjoy the benefits of Jio GigaFiber.
