Is There Life After IDEO?
When people think about IDEO, they often picture a renowned design and consulting firm known for pioneering user-centered design and design thinking. Many individuals and organizations have been influenced by IDEO's methodologies, leading to continuous innovation and the application of these principles in diverse sectors. But what about life after IDEO?
For those who have worked at IDEO, life after the company often takes on various forms, including entrepreneurship, consulting, or leadership roles at other organizations. IDEO's culture fosters creativity and collaboration, which are valuable skills in numerous fields. However, the business can evolve, and sometimes it's time for a change that can lead to new and exciting opportunities.
A Personal Journey
I spent 15 incredible years at IDEO, which set me up for an even more incredible last 10 years. I was fortunate to work there, but when the business changed and I found myself not interested in the direction, I made the decision to leave. Honestly, I am glad it worked out that way. It wasn’t because IDEO was a bad place, but it was time for a change. Everything I learned there made a significant difference.
Now, I split my time between being a professor at a major university and an independent consultant working with early-stage startups. I believe I am a lucky guy to have found this balance.
Spinning Off and New Ventures
I have no personal connections with current or ex-IDEOers, but through things I’ve read over the years, it seems that many of them spin off into their own design consultancies and startups. For example, companies like Daylight Design are just a few among many. These individuals apply the skills they honed at IDEO and have a significant real-world impact.
Similarly, some people choose to start their own companies, such as Faraday, IFTTT, and Mailbox. A few even move on to start their own consultancies. Many move on to startups and others work with big clients and connections they’ve made at IDEO. Of all the people I have seen or kept in contact with post-IDEO, everyone seems to be thriving and happy in their new ventures. The co-founder of IDEO, Bill Moggridge, went on to become the director of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York, further demonstrating the lasting impact of IDEO's influence.
Chasing Work-life Balance
Leaving IDEO after a decade was a hard decision, but I felt it was worthy as I wanted to spend more time with my family. This pursuit of a better work-life balance is a common reason for people to leave IDEO, as the fast-paced and demanding nature of the work can consume significant personal time.
Valuing IDEO's Experience
Working at IDEO was a fantastic experience, and I would not trade my time there for anything. However, there are many opportunities out there that need the attention of brilliant and creative minds. I met so many amazing, talented individuals and I hope to find myself working with some of them again down the line. IDEO’s culture of collaboration and creativity can be a stepping stone to numerous successful careers and ventures.
