Navigating a Path to Software Engineering Excellence: From Backlogs to Hardware Networking
As a student in the field of computer science, facing backlogs and a lack of interest in programming can be overwhelming. However, with the right mindset and strategy, one can turn around these challenges and pursue a future in a different domain, such as computer hardware networking. In this article, I will share my journey and offer guidance on how to navigate these hurdles effectively.
My Journey
Five months ago, I faced a complex situation where I had two active backlogs and had already missed six months of the placement season. Adding to the mix, I lacked programming skills and interest in the field. As a result, I didn’t prepare for any competitive exams and didn’t have the necessary skills to secure a job. This realization forced me to reassess and prioritize my goals.
Improving Skills and Clearing Backlogs
Knowing that I needed to reinforce my skills, I enrolled in a data analytics course on Coursera and Edx. I completed the course within two weeks and moved on to learning about statistics. This not only improved my mathematical skills but also increased my confidence in the subject. Additionally, I prepared for and performed well in the AMCAT examination. Clearing my backlogs became my immediate goal, and I didn’t miss a single class. My dedication paid off as I managed to achieve an 'A' grade in both subjects, showcasing my resilience and determination.
Gaining Discipline and Developing Reading Habits
Discipline and consistency are crucial for success. I set up reasonable targets and timetables for myself, ensuring daily attendance at classes for subjects I had previously failed. This not only helped me clear my backlogs but also improved my understanding of the subjects. Reading became a significant part of my routine, and I recommend beginning with a daily newspaper read and gradually diving deeper into topics that interest you. Consistency is key, and while progress may seem slow, it ultimately leads to significant gains.
Lessons in Humility and Long-term Planning
Humility played a crucial role in my journey. Recognizing my weaknesses and seeking help when needed, instead of relying solely on my current abilities, helped me learn and grow. This approach not only improved my skills but also instilled a positive attitude towards learning. It’s essential to view setbacks as stepping stones rather than failures.
Postgrad and Future Planning
After successfully completing my degree and clearing all my backlogs, I realized that pursuing a Master's in Computer Hardware Networking would be a wise decision. This field combines my interest in building systems and offers a unique perspective on technology that aligns with my skills and passion.
One of the internship opportunities I secured took place at Franklin Templeton Investments, which has been an invaluable experience. This journey has taught me the importance of skill development, perseverance, and long-term planning.
Financial Advice and Further Steps
Regarding your financial investment, I would recommend investing in a liquid debt fund and then transitioning through a Systematic Transfer Plan (STP) to a good equity fund. Such a strategy can provide a balanced approach to wealth management, combining the stability of debt with the potential growth of equity.
By taking the right decisions and maintaining a positive mindset, you can navigate your academic and professional journey successfully. Wishing you the best in your future endeavors.
Cheers!
