Navigating the Journey to CAT 2020 Success: A Year of Dedication and Determination
Years ago, a myriad of challenges faced an average engineering student. Today, I reflect on my journey, from academic underachievement to CAT (Common Admission Test) success. This article delves into the intense and often tumultuous path that led to my ultimate goal of cracking the prestigious CAT. It aims to provide valuable insights for those embarking on a similar journey over the next 12 months.
Carrier Start: A Mixed Bag of Results and Decisions
My academic journey began with a rather mediocre record—an 84/74 CGPA. Despite this, with a fee waiver, I managed to secure an admission in a private college. Looking back, I regret not fully capitalizing on this opportunity. However, my focus quickly shifted towards improving my SGPA to mitigate the impact on my overall academic record. I labored to achieve a respectable 8.5 SGPA, further climbing the ranks to a 6th position in my class.
Breakthrough and Challenges Began
Preparation for CAT truly began with a structured approach, enrolling in the TIME Bhopal program. My resolve was unwavering, and I never missed a class, making it a point to subcribe to daily newspapers for extra reading material. I delved into competitive exam strategies, solving classroom materials and constructing various tables, charts, cubes, and squares.
Early Simulations and Setbacks
My first AimCAT experience was a victorious climb, scoring 67 with an 84th percentile. Joy and optimism were palpable as I continued to read novels, including Angels and Demons, and the Shiva Trilogy. Alas, the next AimCAT plunged me into despair; a mere 32 points stood as a stark reminder of the mountains I needed to climb. I recognized the importance of meticulous analysis and embarked on an exhaustive preparation phase.
The Impact of Events: Cats and Contingencies
Coaching and college classes faced a sudden halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finding myself back home, I confronted the unyielding reality that my preparation might have been on the wrong track. Social media deactivation followed, as I believed this was the root of my wavering confidence. Isolation and relentless preparation, however, did not yield the desired results. My scores remained stagnant, almost 50 percentiles.
Reinvigoration and SimCATs
With only four months left, I enrolled in additional SimCATs to boost my performance. Regardless of the final outcome, my experience has taught me invaluable lessons in perseverance. Despite the setback, every step forward brought me closer to my goal, albeit seemingly stagnant.
Post-CAT Reflections and Future Plans
My CAT score was a mere 77th percentile with 45 marks, and my subsequent attempts on other exams left much to be desired. NMAT 226, XAT 73, NMAT 226, and SNAP 88 are part of a mixed bag of outcomes. Navigating the choice between TCS and SIBM B, I am amidst a dilemma. Alternatively, preparing for the Navy SSB, State PCS, and even exploring TCS further underscores my journey’s unpredictability.
Lessons Learned and Future Directions
The journey to CAT 2020 exposed the grotesque inadequacies of social media, the need for spiritual inclinations, and the significance of being realistic about one's goals. Though I may still be grappling with the meaning behind pursuing an MBA, I have learned a great deal about self-improvement and the value of persistence in the face of challenges.
Conclusion: Embracing Failure as a Stepping Stone
As I move forward, my advice to fellow aspirants is to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. Success is not always immediately attainable, but the journey itself is rich with valuable lessons. Wishing all well on your CAT and life's numerous challenges.
