Nikon Z6 Firmware Updates: Enhancements and New Features

Nikon Z6 Firmware Updates: Enhancements and New Features

As of my last update in August 2023, Nikon had not officially announced any new firmware updates for the Nikon Z6. However, Nikon typically releases firmware updates to improve performance, add features, or fix bugs for their cameras. To find the most current information regarding firmware updates for the Z6, I recommend checking Nikon's official website or their support page. They would provide the latest announcements and downloads.

Nikon’s Latest Z6 Firmware Release 3.10

Latest Upgrades and Enhancements

The latest firmware release for the Nikon Z6 is 3.10, which includes several key improvements and new features. Here’s an overview of what’s new:

Improved Focus Tracking Operation

One of the most significant changes is the enhanced focus-tracking operation. You can now easily toggle subject tracking on and off by pressing the shutter-release button halfway or holding down the AF-ON button while shooting stills in AF-C mode. Just release either button, and the focus point returns to its previous setting. Additionally, subject tracking can be assigned to a camera or lens Fn button for convenient tracking while using the EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) in Auto-Area AF mode.

Impressive Pet Portraits with Enhanced Animal Detection AF

Pet portraits are challenging due to pets' tendency to move. Nikon’s latest firmware includes the Animal Detection AF, which makes it easier to capture great portraits of your furry friends. This feature is available as part of the Firmware 3.0 upgrade for both the Z 7 and Z 6. Just like Eye AF for humans, Animal Detection AF reliably finds focus on a dog or cat's eye, even for those with shaggy fur.

Support for New NIKKOR Z Lenses

Firmware 3.0 adds support for advanced NIKKOR Z lens controls. Users can assign two Lens Fn buttons, employ the focus limit switch, and fully support autofocusing with manual override (M/A) mode, enhancing the use of the new NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S and other compatible lenses.

Expanded Support for CFexpress

The update also expands support for CFexpress memory cards. Sony-benchmarked cards from ProGrade, Lexar, and SanDisk Extreme Pro series will be compatible with Z 7 and Z 6 cameras using Firmware 3.0, ensuring smoother and faster data transfer.
