Review of Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Prospects for Future Frog God Games
While there may not be a review of the second game due to its absence on console, the first game Pathfinder: Kingmaker holds a notable 74/100 rating. This review aims to provide insights into my experience with Kingmaker and hints at the potential of Wrath of the Righteous, the follow-up game that’s slated for release.
Personal Experience with Kingmaker
I have played Kingmaker to some extent and have found it enjoyable despite its repetitive beginning, which is a common issue in similar RPGs. Despite not finishing the game fully, I still recommend it to players who are fans of isometric RPGs and those who appreciate the tabletop game mechanics of Pathfinder.
For those unfamiliar with Wrath of the Righteous, it’s on my wishlist, and like with Kingmaker, there’s a fair amount of speculation about how the story and gameplay will unfold. However, if the quality of the first game is any indication, I’m confident that Wrath of the Righteous will also be an enjoyable experience.
Overview of Pathfinder: Kingmaker
As a long-time advocate of the Pathfinder tabletop game and fan of isometric role-playing games like the Baldur’s Gate series, Pathfinder: Kingmaker is a game that resonates deeply with me. Backing the game during its Kickstarter campaign affirmed my belief in the importance of bringing Pathfinder to the video game space.
The game faced some initial challenges with its technical problems and gameplay balancing, which dampened the early reception. However, in the current state of the game, it successfully captures the essence of isometric games and introduces players to the unique setting of Pathfinder.
Gameplay Analysis
Kingmaker excels in transferring the rules of Pathfinder, simplifying some aspects while adapting others. The game offers a wide variety of classes to choose from, giving players countless options for their gameplay. However, classes like the Paladin seem to hold a significant advantage throughout the entire game. Preparing for battles and strategic planning are crucial elements, and effectively preparing your character for combat can make a substantial difference.
In addition to the gameplay, the game introduces a significant new aspect: kingdom building. While this feature is commendable, it can sometimes be challenging to manage due to the requirement to return to your kingdom for certain tasks, making instant travel a non-option.
Story and Character Development
The game’s story adaptation of the Kingmaker campaign is both wonderful and well-executed. The choices made throughout the game are critical and lead to different endings, allowing for multiple paths and diverse outcomes. Each companion you encounter brings something unique to the table, offering side stories and expanding the setting’s lore. Making choices that impact the storyline can significantly alter the direction of the story, making the experience rich and engaging.
Future Prospects for Frog God Games
To conclude, while the game faced some initial hurdles, its robust development post-launch and the support from Owlcat Studios indicate that there is much promise for ongoing improvements. Owlingcat Studios (Frog God Games) has demonstrated their commitment to refining and enhancing the game experience. It would be a shame not to pursue more games in this series given the fertile ground for adventures inspired by Pathfinder.
