The 15-Day Internet Fast: My Journey to Digital Detox
Have you ever considered trying to live without WiFi and the internet for an extended period? I did, and here's my journey of how I managed to do it for 15 days and the lessons I learned along the way.
Breaking Free from Dependencies
After going through a breakup around 1.5 years ago, I found myself emotionally fragile. Consequentially, I decided to distance myself from the digital world by pausing my social media accounts. My best friend was a beacon of support during this time, but even his kindness couldn't shield me from the emotional turmoil. As his attention gradually diminished, I found myself feeling increasingly alienated. The phone that once connected me to everything now felt like a constant symbol of pain and isolation.
To cope, I decided to leave my mobile phone at home, directly in the almirah (wardrobe) for an entire day. The idea was to distract myself with other activities and maintain a semblance of normalcy. Slowly but surely, I came to accept that I could function without the constant digital presence. In a strange way, this forced me to focus on other aspects of my life and find joy in less digitized activities.
The 15-Day Challenge
My biggest challenge was to live without internet and WiFi for 15 days. I prepared myself by bringing plenty of books, novels, sketchbooks, and other items to keep myself occupied. My goal was to determine if I could thrive without the comfort of digital connectivity. I decided to embrace the experience and see where it took me.
During these 15 days, I found myself unexpectedly embracing the present moment. Without the constant notifications and distractions from the internet, my mind became clearer and my senses more heightened. I discovered that I could focus on reading a book, sketching in a notebook, or engaging in conversation without feeling the urge to check my phone every few minutes.
Lessons Learned
Living without WiFi and the internet for 15 days taught me valuable lessons about digital dependency and emotional resilience. Here are some key insights:
No Longer Feeling Overwhelmed: Once I stopped relying on the internet for constant validation and information, I found that my mind was less cluttered and more capable of deep thinking and meaningful connections. Enhanced Self-Reflection: Without the constant digital noise, I was able to spend more time reflecting on my thoughts and emotions. This helped me gain a deeper understanding of myself and my needs. Emotional Resilience: By deliberately disconnecting from the digital world, I cultivated a stronger emotional resilience. I realized that I didn't need the internet to cope with challenges in my life.Living without WiFi and the internet for 15 days was undoubtedly a challenging journey, but it also opened my eyes to the potential of a digital detox. It not only helped me regain control over my life but also taught me that sometimes stepping away from technology can lead to unexpected positive outcomes.
Conclusion
Virtual life and the internet are a part of modern society, but they shouldn't dominate every aspect of our lives. Taking a break from the web can bring new perspectives and help us rediscover our connection with the real world. The next time you feel overwhelmed by your digital life, consider a short digital detox and see how it can transform your wellbeing.
