The Absence of the MacBook Pro Logo: A Design Choice or Somewhat More Than That?
The absence of the MacBook Pro logo below the screen is primarily a design choice by Apple. Here are a few reasons for this decision:
Minimalist Design
Apple has shifted towards a more minimalist aesthetic in its product designs. Removing the logo contributes to a cleaner and more streamlined look. This move reflects the company's philosophy of combining aesthetics with functionality while maintaining brand identity.
Display Technology
The MacBook Pro models now utilize advanced display technologies such as Retina displays. These technologies may not accommodate a traditional logo placement without impacting the screen's design or integrity. By removing the logo from the bezel, Apple ensures that the display remains unobstructed and delivers the best possible user experience.
Branding Evolution
Apple has focused on branding through the overall product design rather than relying on prominent logos. The Apple logo on the lid is often sufficient for brand recognition. This approach not only maintains the brand's reputation but also allows for a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.
Apple has been adopting a minimalist approach to the branding of its products, as many of them have already been established as some of the most iconic in the industry. The 2021 MacBook Pro is the latest example of this trend.
Branding Minimalism
Apple began by dropping the “iPhone” name badge found on the back, starting with the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models in 2019. In April 2021, the redesigned 24-inch M1 iMac ditched the iconic Apple logo on the bottom bezel in favor of a clean, uninterrupted design, making the vibrant colors on the chin stand out more.
The Case of the MacBook Pro
This trend now continues on the 2021 MacBook Pro, with its name no longer engraved on the bezel but embossed beautifully on the bottom casing for a subtle and elegant reminder of its model. Interestingly, since 2008, the location of the MacBook Pro name has been traveling back and forth between the lower bezel of the screen and beneath the chassis, with each new generation.
A Design Tradition
The 2nd-generation unibody MacBook Pro launched in 2008 first had the name inscribed under the display cover glass. In 2012, with the introduction of the 3rd-generation MacBook Pro and the Retina display, the name migrated 'down under' the device. Four years later, with the Touch Bar MacBook Pro, the name resurfaced and returned to the bezel. Today, in 2021, Apple has decided to conceal the name beneath the chassis for a clean bezel, conforming to its minimalist branding approach across its product portfolio.
Ironically, this question was asked in reference to the 2012 Retina MacBook Pro but it has become relevant again with the 2021 MacBook Pro.
An Expression of the MacBook Pro's Journey
I guess you could consider the MacBook Pro's name nomadic, synonymous with the idea of never settling and always being on the move for something better. This might be Apple's low-key figurative expression of what the MacBook Pro actually represents—a tool for progress that evolves with each generation to meet the demands of its users.
