When Will the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 Stop Receiving OS Updates and Be Considered Obsolete?

The 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 was released with iOS 10 and has since received multiple updates. Apple typically provides iOS updates for devices for around 5 to 6 years after their release. Given the iPad Pro 10.5 was introduced in June 2017, it is likely that it will stop receiving major iOS updates around 2023 or 2024.

As of my last update in August 2023, the device is still receiving updates. However, by 2024, it may no longer be supported with the latest iOS versions. Even after the official support ends, the device will continue to function and can run the last supported version of iOS for an extended period.

In summary, you can expect the iPad Pro 10.5 to be considered obsolete in terms of software support around 2024 to 2025.

Apple Products and Obsolescence

It's important to note that Apple products do not just stop working when the OS upgrades end. If a device is still performing satisfactorily for your needs, it can continue to function just fine. Really old iPads, like the original iPad mini from 2012 or even a G4 Mac from 15 years ago, continue to serve as fine players for video, music, and photos, or even for games that are no longer supported. For example, my iPad 1 has games on it that are out of business, but they still play fine.

“Obsolete” is a relative term. Generally, once an Apple product stops receiving updates, it is still not considered obsolete. My sister’s original iPad mini from 2012 is still in use, and I even have a 2008 iMac that is still functional. So, even if the 10.5-inch iPad Pro was discontinued tomorrow, it would still work beautifully without any issues.

The iPad Pro 10.5, with its 4GB of RAM and the capable A12X Bionic chip, will likely remain functional for several more years. Its performance is still incredibly strong, nearly three years after its release. I am currently typing on one right now, and it continues to have better app support and faster performance.

Expectations and Reality

The latest iOS updates have rejuvenated an 8-year-old daughter's 2013 iPad Air. Similarly, a 2017 10.5-inch iPad Pro is expected to be supported for at least another 2–4 years, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

No one can predict when a device will be discontinued, but based on trends and manufacturing capabilities, the 10.5-inch iPad Pro will likely remain a functional device for many more years. Its robust hardware guarantees continued usability, and its software support is expected to continue for quite some time.

As someone who has witnessed the longevity of Apple devices, I can confidently say that the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 is still a valuable and functional device well into the future.
